3/5 stars

When I first started looking into I wondered by I couldn’t find an actual synopsis that didn’t just say it was about rich kids that spend their summers at Martha’s Vineyard. Now I know why. It was truly better that I knew nothing about this book going into it.

I will say my main points though.

  1. This book is definitely worth reading even though I only gave it 3 stars.

  2. the main reason why this was not a solid 4-star book was because of the writing style and how much it made me want to throw my book across the room.

  3. the only true redeeming and recognizable quality about We Were Liars was the twist ending. It kind of reminded me of the plot twist at the end of The Sixth Sense.

More on point 2:

The writing was just way too fluffy for me. And by fluffy, I mean pretentious and unnecessary. It was just way too choppy and filled with sentence fragments under the guise that it was “poetic”. It honestly took away from the emotional aspect of the book and kind of prevented me from connecting with the characters even though there was very little substance to each of them :) For instance, "His nose was dramatic, his mouth sweet. Skin deep brown, hair black, and waving. Body wired with energy. Gat seemed spring-loaded. Like he was searching for something. He was contemplation and enthusiasm. Ambition and strong coffee. I could have looked at him forever."
