2/5 Stars

This novel was on the list for my English class this semester. After reading Agatha Christies', The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, I was expecting something equally as great, if not better. But this novel did not hold the same intrigue as Christies' novel did for me. Granted, they are both of a different detective fiction genre. This hardboiled type novel was not really what had me glued to the pages. Hardboiled fiction definitely highlights the cruel and harsh realizations of society and brings them to life in detective fiction, however, I believe that I read to escape reality for the duration of the book and read about things that may be a little unrealistic because its' amazing reading about things that are very likely not to happen. I can't say that this is a bad novel because it isn't. It is a classic detective novel. But it really did not have me on the edge of my seat or anything close. Overall, I don't think I'd recommend this to anyone with my same reading preferences. I would definitely recommend this to a cynic lol.
