Oh, this is what I needed. This is what I needed to get me out of my reading slump. I didn’t know this is what I needed until I was unknowingly giggling at their awkwardness and banter the entire time I was reading. It is exactly what is advertised: a sweet, summery romance.
Beach Read is a fluffy, warm summery story that follows a writer, January Andrews, as she discovers that her next-door neighbor is August Everett, her long-time literary rival since college. While they find themselves neighboring for the summer, they also try to write each other's literary genres whilst having adorable banter.
I love the dynamic between these two. They truly just click. My love language is basically just me making fun of my significant other and then teasing me back with witty comebacks so this novel really spoke to me. Their banter is snarky, very funny, but good-natured. Although their story was a slow burn, I really loved the transparency between the two about their feelings. In romance novels, it may be hard to find honesty about one's feelings until the end proclamation of one's love for the other.
Something Emily Henry perfected was the brooding male lead, but in Gus’ case he wasn’t an asshole and we saw his sweet and sensitive side as much as his brooding “no one talk to me” side.
Some of it was kind of cheesy, but if you can’t tell already, I’m a complete sucker for cheesy romance stories. Anyways, at this point, I will read anything Emily Henry writes. Stay tuned for my review of Book Lovers when it’s released!!
